I have just spent 4 hours with microsoft who remotely accessed my laptop only to discover that the problem is with Adobe. I cannot open pdf attachments, whether it is in outlook or on my desktop. This changed overnight, I had no problem yesterday. I can right click and it will open in a browser but that's it!

As per the description above, you are not able to open any PDF file in Outlook or on your desktop, Is that correct?
Assuming the Adobe Reader is installed, Open Reader, navigate to Edit menu -> Preferences -> Security Enhances & disable the Protected mode.
Check if it brings any change.
Restart your computer, and then download and install the Reader again, to download Reader: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution Link: https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Hope this helps, and keep us posted with the results.
